Community Service Grants Open For 2022!

Rotary Club of Oak Harbor Community Service Grants

The Rotary Club of Oak Harbor Community Service Grants Program is intended to enhance the quality of life in the Oak Harbor and the North Whidbey Island Community and is focused on supporting organizations that assist people in need. This marks our 8th year of the program!

The Club funds grants ranging from $500 to $1,200.  Smaller 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations are especially encouraged to apply to allow for special projects or needs that are not otherwise satisfied by general funding sources. There is also limited support available for non 501(c)(3) organizations who assist North Whidbey citizens in need. This non-501(c)(3) option was added as a result of proceeds received from Hydros For Heroes.

Requirements
1. All grant applicants and their beneficiaries must operate within Northern Whidbey Island.
2. Grants are to be spent prior to December 31st of the year of award and are without expectation of further support.
3. Grants are not normally made for operating budgets or endowments.
4. Grant requests will be reviewed for consideration on a quarterly basis through October.
If you require further assistance, please contact Board Chair Kurt Schonberg (email by clicking here) or phone at 360.279.5012.

NEW Food4Haven Freezer!

Our Food4Haven program is moving into frozen dinner menu options now. As none of the churches the Haven is hosted at have freezers to store frozen food, a chest freezer was needed to make this initiative work.
The Rotary Club of Oak Harbor received a donated chest freezer from Rotarian Jim Woessner and the
Sears Hometown Store
. Our Rotary Club (who manages the Food4Haven program — an extension of our Food4Kids Backpack program) loaned the new chest freezer to the Haven to allow for frozen dinners to be offered to its customers 6 nights a week.
The Haven is run by
Whidbey Homeless Coalition
.
Great to be part of an #OHmazing community!

Safeway/Haggen $10,000 Grant!

Nourishing Neighbors Foundation Donate $10,000 to Help Feed Children and Families During Summer

During this exceptionally challenging time, we were fortunate to receive a generous gift that will help us meet the increased demand for food assistance.
We’re excited to receive a $10,000 grant from Nourishing Neighbors Foundation!
The grant is meant to help feed kids and families during summer via our Food4Kids Backpack Program. As we are all aware, hunger relief programs like ours are stretched beyond capacity due the surge in unemployment and other economic and social fallout from the pandemic. In response to what quickly became a critical need, Albertsons Companies pledged $15 Million to Help Feed Children and Families During Summer, part of Safeway/Haggen Foundations’ Nourishing Neighbors Initiative.

We will use these proceeds to fund our expanded summer program that arose out of demand from the pandemic.

“This help from Safeway/Haggen and their generous customers is the lifeline that we desparately need,” said President Kurt Schonberg. “The people we’re serving are beyond grateful for this support, and so our we.”
Our deepest gratitude to Safeway/Haggen Foundation. We are grateful to be part of Nourishing Neighbors Family! The support, partnership, and generosity are truly making a difference."

New Generations Update

Posted by Aaron Syring

Dear Fellow Oak Harbor Rotarians:

It seems like we had good interest in the Rotary New Generations (youth) programs that Collin Curtis overviewed at our meeting on January 25th.

Of the many ways we might move forward in regards to youth activities here are two ideas:

January is Rotary Awareness Month

Posted by Aaron Syring

Spread the word!  If you know someone who is interested in membership, our newly reformatted application (now a fillable pdf) is found in the downloads section of the website or directly by clicking here.

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community. Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring. The beginning of a new year is a good opportunity to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year.
